A Message From The Founder
Todd Burdge, Founder of EVOLV Engineering
“You don’t seem like an engineer” is a comment I often get.
It’s not a compliment, and, like most interactions, it has little to do with me and mostly how we all make sense of our experience.
Our brains are hard-wired to simplify – to predict our world based on past experiences. Most of this happens in the background, and we probably have not spent much time thinking about WHY we believe what we believe. It doesn’t help that we have become increasingly specialized and even siloed in our professions.
Generally, we don’t expect engineers to be creative, and for the most part, we skip the arts in our education for engineers because why would we need that?
It’s a question worth asking because I believe we are all creative, and understanding that opens our minds to the value of creativity in every organization. I would argue that Structural Engineering is an incredibly creative act. Problem-solving is creative. Communicating is creating in real-time.
We are holistic creatures. Humans, being. And yet, we are expected to compartmentalize our lives, limiting our connection and causing a disconnected world.
I would argue that our relationship's success hinges on our relationship with ourselves. We have relationships with everything – money, work, families, and identities. Showing up as the best version of ourselves requires that we do the hard work of healing and that healing occurs when interacting with the community.
EVOLV wants to leave people and the built environment better than we found them, requiring we #BuildDifferentlyTogether.
Internally, we are building a business that values the individual holistically. We seek to inspire and empower our people.
Externally, we seek like-minded clients to collaboratively create buildings and infrastructure that bring value and lasting positive change to the built environment.
If you are an Architect, Owner, Developer, Contractor, or Engineer and would like to work together, please reach out.
Until then,
Todd
